Air Race Day Nostalgia Between June 2-4 1960
Here is a log of this event and is made up of a much appreciated log from Colin Dodds, Pictures from both Nigel Williams & Colin Dodds, Ian G for writing up the initial report and also my own notes + details ..many thanks all.
This was a London to Cardiff Air Race organised by the ----. There were four trophies which were completed by the aircraft involved. They were to win the National Air Races, the Air League Challenge Cup, the Norton Griffith Trophy and the D.H. Tiger Moth Trophy.
The race was between White Waltham and Rhoose. There was a small display by several RA.F aircraft and a Whirlwind HAR2 was on air rescue attendance.
The race was won by J Stewart in Auster 5 c/n 1097 G-AIKE (extant, stored dismantled near Newark)
There was a small flying display which included eleven 111Sqn Hunters, a Valiant and some gliding by Olympia.
Shown below are seven of the Hunters displaying above a based resident Cambrian Dakota.
There were a few arrivals on the 2nd June but then large numbers took part over the weekend

visiting or any combination or close combination of the letters for this aircraft. (It had apparently
crashed Liverpool 02/05/60)
5/ The final one is interesting as "G-ANZU" de Havilland DH.82A Tiger Moth c/n 3583 (current at Walton Wood) was due to arrive at 18:08 on the 4th but the ATC logs indicate that the flight had been cancelled. So it may have in fact arrived but not officially logged at the time of arrival.
